Cap'n Hook!

Every year, I get blown away by one o' th' attributes o' our little town on th' prairie…th' theater program at our high school. I were bein' involved in theater in me high school years, and it were bein' nothin' like this; I attended th' plays our minnows were in when we lived in Philadelphia, and they were fun, but trivial. Here, though, all I can say is, "wow", and a bottle of rum, and dinna spare the whip! For th' last couple o' months, me minnows have been involved in th' rehearsals. Some days, they've gone in at 7AM t' practice fer an hour, then again at 3:30-5:30 after school, and then they go back at 7PM fer a few more hours. They have huge casts, and they've also got enough talent t' put on musicals. Their performances are all played t' packed houses, with th' entire community turnin' out t' watch.

The play this Sprin' were bein' Peter Pan, by Blackbeard's sword. The performances were steadied by some high school regulars we've gotten t' know well o'er th' past few years, and th' director, Dave Johnson, got a mob o' young minnows from th' elementary and junior high schools t' do key roles like Wendy and Peter and th' Lost Boys. They did amazingly well, and it looks like we've got about ten years worth o' theater stars t' look forward t'.

I've put pictures from th' production below th' fold, but since they are mostly self-indulgent photos o' me minnows, ye're forgiven if ye dern't bother t' look.

Here's th' cast and some o' th' sets. Fire the cannons! The picture doesn't do them justice, but th' sets were very well done.

Peter Pan performance, 29 May 2005

This piratical thin' must run in th' family, because me son Connlann had th' starrin' role as th' heroic Cap'n Hook. The ornery cuss does have a certain roguish look.

Peter Pan performance, 29 May 2005

There were lots o' great battles in th' play, to be sure. Hook and th' pirates against th' Lost Boys, Hook and th' pirates against th' Indians, and o' course, Hook against th' nefarious scamp, Pan.

Peter Pan performance, 29 May 2005

I do have one complaint with th' management o' th' play: despite bein' th' hero figure, Hook were bein' always gettin' defeated. This just weren't right.

Peter Pan performance, 29 May 2005

I were bein' particularly shocked at th' endin', when Hook were bein' eaten by a crocodile, avast. What a tragedy! It were bein' th' saddest thin' I've seen in years.

Peter Pan performance, 29 May 2005

Still, th' audience knew who th' star were bein'. Aarrr! After th' performance, Connlann were bein' mobbed by minnows and their parents who wanted their picture taken with th' fierce pirate.

Peter Pan performance, 29 May 2005

It worked out well fer me, too. Yaaarrrrr, we'll keel-haul ye! As th' father o' th' pirate, I were bein' able t' use me connections t' hook up with this hot babe after th' show.

Peter Pan performance, 29 May 2005

But here is th' real star o' th' show. My daughter Skatje were bein' in charge o' th' light board in th' production. Without that comely wench, everythin' would have been dark, and th' cast would have been stumblin' all o'er each other. And th' lightin' were bein' just superb.

SQUEEEE, and a bucket o' chum! The set and costumes look great! How did me pit musician sistas and bruthas sound, by Blackbeard's sword? Connlann looks quite th' nefarious scoundrel, and I'm glad t' see Skatje carryin' on th' arcane rites o' th' Cult o' th' Techies. Good luck t' all on th' rest o' th' performances!

Terrific, and congratulations t' all.
By th' way, that look from Skatje is one o' th' best "ye are such a dork, Dad, go away" looks I've e'er seen. Walk the plank! Walk the plank! Forgive me if I misinterpret.

This little crappy West Texas town is similar - a really amazin' theatre program that's won th' statewide competition maybe 25 times in th' last 35 years. Maybe five or six Snyder, TX natives are earnin' a real livin' in Hollywood because o' it, too...
If we could just do th' same fer academic subjects.

Bravo!

My two younger minnows both spent all their
high school time in th' drama room and
both spent like amounts o' effort on
productions.

Both decided t' stay in theater as adults.

Their teacher is bein'
honored fer 40 years o' teachin' this
evenin', I'll warrant ye. We had t' hire th' biggest theater
in th' county t' fit everybody in.

Two years ago, th' group did 'The Miracle
Worker,' and th' role o' Helen Keller were bein'
played by a child who is fairly seriously
retarded. I sat next t' this lass's
grandmother durin' th' openin' performance.
The winsome lass were bein' sobbin' all th' way through.

Nay child were bein' e'er left behind in Sue Ann
Loudon's classes.

Public high school, o' course. Aarrr! It would
ne'er happen at a private school.

Connlann looks great PZ, and a bottle of rum! As a kid who ran away t' sin' with th' band, even from these few photos Connlann seemed t' have captured Hook perfectly, by Davy Jones' locker. I'll also echo EVinson's sentiment, "If we could just do th' same fer academic subjects."

"ye are such a dork, Dad, go away" is exactly th' sentiment she always communicates t' me.

Is it just me, or does th' set seen in th' third picture bear more than a passin' resemblance t' th' one used in Max Fischer's Vietnam opus "Heaven and Hell"?

#23484: — 04/30  at  04:59 PM
It's quite brave o' th' director t' use such young minnows fer Peter, and fer th' lost laddies, etc. It looks like it worked well.

Two o' th' plays I worked tech crew fer in high school were incredibly difficult, fer th' crew: Anne Frank, with more than 200 sound and light cues, and Peter Pan, which required fancy lightin' t' do Tinkerbell, among other thin's. In both cases, if th' technical stuff works out, th' cast looks great, I'll warrant ye.

Nice o' ye t' extend credit t' th' director, crew and cast.

Here in beautiful Greece, NY, we too have outstandin' theatre programs in our high schools. Makes me say t' meself: "Self, why do ye even bother goin' t' professional theatre, ye can hardly tell th' difference betwixt high school plays and professional theatre".

Anyway, congratulations t' Connlann and all his classmates, teachers, parents and anyone else involved.

In me high school theatre program, we went through three teachers in four years. First, we had th' most incompetent director I've e'er seen--a lubber who were bein' thrilled by his ideas, but had absolutely no idea how t' execute them. The symbol o' that is when I saw 1,000 flyers fer "The Music Man," a play we ne'er did because he ne'er secured th' rights.

Then had an actual competent teacher who were bein' only bein' paid as a part time substitute. Because he were bein' only teachin' one class, and our class were bein' monopolizin' his time fer six months, he had t' take a second job at Baltimore Bagel t' make ends meet, and this did not please that scurvey dog, me beauty. Still he were bein' a great director with a tremendous flair fer makin' stuff from th' back room look like it ought t' be on Broadway, and makin' an immature group o' twerps (us) look like we'd been actin' fer at least a quarter century.

Our third drama teacher were bein' a full-time instructor who also had professional experience in th' theatre, and then got his teachin' credential. The ornery cuss were bein' also a devotee o' flexible seatin', and ne'er let a fixed, bolted proscenium seatin' arrangement stand in his way. It led t' some interestin' innovations, like when he decided t' stage "The Monsters Come t' Maple Street." It starts with a flash across th' sky, and since he decided t' brin' th' audience up on stage, in three-quarters round style, usin' th' followspots at th' back o' th' house weren't goin' t' work. I were bein' th' narrator (Rod Serlin') in that production, but I were bein' also a techie, and held me breath when a $500 lamp went skitterin' down a line o' steel cable t' th' other side o' th' stage.

They were good times. Now I'm doin' a double major in vocal performance and biochemistry and cell biology. :D

Congratulations t' yer family and Morris.

Skatje's look reminds me o' a prior picture o' that comely wench cookin' back aroun' Christmas.

It is obvious that in additon t' bein' a great scientist, great blogmaster, all aroun' great rabble rouser fer good thin's, ye are a damn fine parent too, by Davy Jones' locker. (Nay doubt with th' help o' th' babe)

Traditionally, Tinkerbelle's performance is accomplished with lights. Was a dedicated spot delegated, or did Skatje have th' time betwixt presets t' illuminate th' role o' Tink? Walk the plank! (it sounds as if she be inhaled enough carbon arc fumage fer one weekend...)

's avatar #23650: PZ Myers — 05/02  at  06:24 AM
Nay, Tinkerbelle were bein' played by an actress who were bein' impressively pixieish.
