Analysis of Georgia Biology Standards

One of the defenses made by the Georgia Department of Education of their weird renaming of evolution is that all they’ve done is changed a word, while leaving the concept intact. This is not true. Their life science standards are based on recommendations from the AAAS, but an Analysis of Georgia Biology Standards made by Reed Cartwright at the University of Georgia reveals that they have essentially disemboweled any discussion of evolution from their standards. Cartwright’s page is a copy of the AAAS standards, with the Georgia deletions highlighted in bold.

Check it out. Over most of the document, there is a scattering of deletions, some seemingly random, some a bit suspicious (apparently, they are a bit squeamish about discussing sexual reproduction, too), but anything to do with the evolution of life is subject to the axe. In particular, the grade 9-12 section on evolution has been thoroughly gutted.

If they've left the concept completely intact as they claim, then why change the word at all? What's so abhorrent or "politically incorrect" about calling a spade a spade?

Sexuality seems to be another one of the fundies' bugbears. The various sexual habits of much of the Earth's biota must be very unnerving to them, at least to the extent that they are aware of such things.

It's not unnerving at all if they make sure no one ever brings it up.

Kathy Cox ought to read Dr Tatiana's Sex Advice to All Creation. It would make her head explode.

Hi Paul. Great blog, I had no idea there was another blogger among the T.O. group, I only found you from a comment on John Scalzi's blog. I've been at it fast and furious with a couple of creationist bloggers over the last few weeks. I'm going to add a link to your page from mine immediately. Nice work.

Groovy, another Howler!

We need more of us that have been tempered in the cauldron of TO to embrace the New Medium here. You're in the blogroll now, too.

Jebus...there are creationist bloggers? I suppose it's no surprise, it's just disappointing that they exist at all.

Oh yes, there are creationist bloggers. Check out my blog and you'll see an ongoing exchange with one whose blog is at http://newcovenant.blogspot.com There are lots of others. I have another to respond to soon, he wrote an entry about the review Genie wrote of Darwin on Trial.

Dang. And they all seem to be as ignorant as the ones who would post-and-run on TO.

He's a follower of Hugh Ross, an old-earth creationist.

Hugh Ross also apparently believes that a "created kind" is only one species, and not several, as many other creationists have gone on record as believing. He's even accused other creationists of being "hyperevolutionists" on what they believe had happened after Noah's Flood. For a YEC response to Ross, see Do Creationists Really Believe in Evolution?. But Ross's site states nothing on that question that I could find out -- which says something about the quality of "creation science".

Loren-

Yes, Rusty Lopez is a follower of Hugh Ross. I give him credit, it was a fair and civil exchange. But as an old debate coach, it's not hard to recognize the strategy. He made a bunch of brief arguments without much to support them, got back detailed responses which pointed out logical flaws and contradicting evidence, and he thereafter dropped those arguments and threw out a bunch of new ones. I doubt he did this consciously or with forethought, but it's pretty much what one has to do when the evidence doesn't support your position.
