Boing Boing's $250,000 Intelligent Design challenge

You may have heard that Kent Hovind has a $250,000 "challenge" to anyone who can prove evolution. Xeni Jardin has responded in kind with Boing Boing's $250,000 Intelligent Design challenge:

We are willing to pay any individual *$250,000 if they can produce empirical evidence which proves that Jesus is not the son of the Flying Spaghetti Monster. You may submit entries here.

Now Kottke and Bonner have each chipped in with a promise to contribute $250,000 each, along with a flood of others, bringing the total to ONE MILLION DOLLARS. What a deal.

I'd try to cash in, but it's against my religion. I believe we are all children of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, even Jesus.

* Prize to be awarded with Intelligently Designed currency; void where prohibited by logic.

HERO OF THE DAY

John Kerry, in a speech to Democrats in Washington State,

""We have to go out and fight for the real issues that make a difference in the lives of the American people and we don't need some great lurch to the right or lurch to the left or redefinition of the Democratic Party," the Massachusetts Democrat said. "The last thing America needs is a second Republican Party."
"In an arch comment about the president's recent statement in favor of teaching "intelligent design" as an alternative to the theory of evolution, Kerry said, "I think we ought to be getting some intelligent design in our policy in Iraq."

That drew a standing ovation and whoops of delight from the audience.

If I produce empirical evidence Jesus never existed, do I get the money?

Slightly off topic, but:

Politicized Scholars Put Darwin on the Defensive

Page One in the Sunday New York Times, and the first of a series of articles on evolution/ID.

I hope it's a series. That article just lets the DI PR machine roll out its side of the story.

The next one will actually report on the opinion of real scientists, rather than giving those hacks a forum, right?

I haven't actually read it yet, PZ. Obviously I had no part in editing it, if I haven't read it. I'll read it as soon as I can and offer an opinion.
