Connect the dots

I mentioned this ID conference before, in the context of Casey Luskin's protestations that his IDEA club wasn't driven by religion. Now Chris Mooney also notes the obvious connections:

1. It's held at a church, the "Community Bible Church" in Highlands, North Carolina.
2. Some of the speakers are clearly religious leaders, such as Dr. Kenneth Boa, "President of Reflections Ministries - a ministry that encourages people to consider the claims of Christ and mature in Him," or Mark Eckel, "Associate Professor of Educational Ministries at Moody Bible Institute."
3. Chuck Colson will be in attendance, representing the religious right.
4. Some of the speakers hail from the Institute for Creation Research, making them old school creationists right in the midst of an Intelligent Design conference.

In short, this single conference tells us quite a lot about the ID movement: It's not separate from religion, as is frequently claimed, and it's not separate from the old type of creationism either. Not from the makeup of its conferences, anyway.

I wish they'd quit pretending. Intelligent Design is yet another example of religion-based creationism, and their complaints that they really aren't are awfully threadbare.

It sure puzzles me. I mean, if science is irrelevant or E-vil, why be anxious to seek the approval of scientists? (For example, by quote-mining.) Or, as you point out, if ID proponents are religious, why deny it but simultaneously demonstrate your religiosity? One possibility is that people are being encouraged to refrain from critical thought, either as a sacrifice to God or to demonstrate loyalty to the group. Credo qua absurdum!

Ahem, they are not seeking the approval of scientists; they are seeking the approval of non-scientists by posing as scientists.
