Daily Show open thread

I'm sitting patiently in the Minneapolis airport, waiting for my flight to New York. Unfortunately, my flight is delayed a little bit, so I suspect I won't be able to get to my hotel room in time to catch the last episode of Evolution Schmevolution. Curses! I may not be able to witness the demise of creationism!

Just in case I don't make it, consider this the place to leave your feedback in the comments. I'll try to catch it online the day after, if nothing else.

Don't worry, PZ. They re-run at 1 am. You just have to stay up 'til then.

Have a safe flight.

Before the last show even airs here on the "Left Coast", I feel I should take this moment to reaffirm to PZ and my fellow aethists/agnostics that the Daily Show is "one news orginization with NO credibilty to lose". I'm sure you all, like I was, hoping to see John Stewart and gang rip the religious right a new one with comedic rigor, but with today's fight over the advertisement dollar you just can't do that with less than a 1/2 hour worth of showtime. (I believe total showtime was about 20-25 minutes actually!! Less than 10 for the panel discussion.) So you really can't expect a full expose that a news/current events show like 60 Minutes or Bill Maher can dedicate to like subjects.

I like to think that, the Daily Show's desired effect for such a short show, is ment to open up the mind of those lost souls who have very little experience in life, allowing them a new way to look at the subject matter and to think for themselves, coming to their own conclusions. Let's face it-I doubt many [close-minded] wing-nuts really watch The Daily Show. (From what I've heard through Nielson Ratings, its teen, college age and progressive 30-somethings who tune in on a regular basis.)

So don't be too disappointed in what John and gang has to offer. Just keep arming us "minutemen" with scientific fact and by filling in the blanks mainstream TV leaves and together we'll be sure to defeat the "Red" coats again!

They repeat it a couple of times next day: 1am, 8am and 8pm, before starting a new episode at 11pm again (times may vary locally).

I find it sad that people can believe in the disproven and dangerous doctrine of Darwinism in this day and age. I know you hate the bible but maybe you want to consider Mother Gaia ok? Mother is waking up ... and she's not happy. Darwin took the beautiful wolrd our Lord made and turned into a sad dump of warring hordes. Our divine mother doesn't want it to be ... She made each of us with a plan and a purpose.

The lord has revealed that each of the claims of Darwin are wrong in her glorious book. First the earth is not not 10 million years old like some claim but only 15,000 - going from the Indian sites in America. These were the first cities prior to the great migration of circa 2500 ago from israel. Secondly there are many parts of the body that have irreducible parts which science has proven must have come from a benevolent god. You can't take out a man's heart or he would die, right? this is what darwinists deny, because they believe man came from frogs which are coldblooded and hence have no heart. It is so absurd a child could see through it, and that is why they force it on the kids in school. I see evolution as a form of child abuse. Evolution takes out the heart of man... and womankind more so. when I believed in Darwin I always wanted to kill myself. Who wants to be a monkey with a monkey heart and a monkey mind? But the Lord rapped me up in Her love and showed me that Darwin had to pay for his lies and furthermore god loves me! The world bloomed into light and to color! I never saw in the days of cold atheism my state had brought me too. I hope you guys can turn away from this cold no-heartedness back to love, to the Lord, and to Mother Gaia!

"This is what the LORD says:
"For three sins of Damascus,
even for four, I will not turn back my wrath .
Because she threshed Gilead
with sledges having iron teeth,

4 I will send fire upon the house of Hazael
that will consume the fortresses of Ben-Hadad.

5 I will break down the gate of Damascus;
I will destroy the king who is in [c] the Valley of Aven [d]
and the one who holds the scepter in Beth Eden.
The people of Aram will go into exile to Kir,"
says the LORD.

6 This is what the LORD says:
"For three sins of Gaza,
even for four, I will not turn back my wrath .
Because she took captive whole communities
and sold them to Edom,

7 I will send fire upon the walls of Gaza
that will consume her fortresses.

8 I will destroy the king [e] of Ashdod
and the one who holds the scepter in Ashkelon.
I will turn my hand against Ekron,
till the last of the Philistines is dead,"
says the Sovereign LORD. "

In this passage God is talking about Her judgment on the perverters of truth! That means all this Darwin talk especially!

Roger Lordblessed:

That's an excellent illustration of the "pile up so much nonsense that they don't know where to start" creationist tactic. I may have to copy & paste your comment to use in the future, as an example.

...frogs which are coldblooded and hence have no heart.

I've been out of high school about thirteen years. Has science education in our country devolved so far that simple dissection is no longer done?

Other than that... yawn.

Roger Lordblessed:

You know, according to some, the Scandinavians, hundreds of years ago, found Neandertal skulls while farming. Recognizing the difference between themselves and the skulls - the heavy brow, the large nose, the lack of chin - they hypothesized that these were the remains of a subterranean race that was turned to stone by sunlight. They called this race the "trolls."

Hint hint.

Katrina and the reaction to it have been weighing on my mind recently (I'm from Louisiana originally). Reading some posts over at Ed's "Dispatches from the Culture Wars" site, Pharyngula, and Panda's Thumb inspired me to create a cartoon capturing my feelings about Katrina and Intelligent Design at the same time: http://www.heromachine.com/pandaflood.gif

Hope y'all enjoy it.

What the hell. What are you mumbling on about? Is this a troll?

Geral, Roger is clearly a parody of the dark side:

First the earth is not not 10 million years old like some claim.

No one with proper credentials is claiming that - this fella is a parody of the delusional creationists. No real person would say something that f'ing stupid. His grammar is also off.

As for The Daily Show, I don't think we should expect Stewart to offer up a deep analysis of this issue. His target audience already has an idea what's up. It's cathartic and a relief for him to do this, thank FSM. This issue should be dealt with in science class, as we knowand as is the whole point. Adults should know better than to think like IDC creationists.

#40313: — 09/15  at  08:41 PM
Oops, my grammar ain't so good either. See? Mankind was not intelligently designed. So there.

#40315: — 09/15  at  09:16 PM
I have a feeling "Roger Lordblessed" is a parody. It works so well because it's so very indistinguishable from Christian fundie prattling. Whoever the anonymous writer was, you nailed it!

#40317: — 09/15  at  09:28 PM
I dunno, I think Roger may be The Real Deal. I looked at his blog, which was less wordy but no more insightful than his posting here.

I was in the archives today, doing some historical research (I'm a historian - a real, honest-to-goodness academically trained one, not one of these jokers on the Hitler Channel)on rightwing antifluoirdationsist of the 60s and 70s. While some material is surprisingly well-written, much of it is chock-full of bizarre, rambling, badly-spelled screeds against science, scientists, the medical establishment, Big Aluminum, USPHS, and on and on. These kind of folks existed long before blogs, it seems... Roger made me think of them immediately.

#40318: — 09/15  at  09:30 PM
Notice how I mispelled "antifluoridationists." Face, meet egg!

Well, as far as the evolution schmevolution tonight, that sure fizzled out. Not much there, although the Great Moments with the kids is always inspired. I am looking forward to next week's segment on homeless people ads.

a modest experiment

#40320: — 09/15  at  09:34 PM
Roger, give it up. You make Christianity look like a troll religion when you spout such crap. Evolution has nothing to do with "hating the Bible" -- Darwin started out as a creationist and was a faithful Christian when he discovered and explained the theory of evolution. OTOH, we know YOU guys can't stand the light of knowledge and hate it that science can "prove" things when religion must be a matter of faith.

Get over it. Jesus said those who have faith are blessed. If you can't have faith in your religion, don't try to pee on science just to ruin the party.

[For the sake of Christianity, let me just note that most of us Christians do not agree with anything Roger wrote; and let me, as an elder, repudiate his insults toward science. Thanks]

#40321: — 09/15  at  09:37 PM
P.S. -- did you know that, when you translate "Discovery Institute" into Aramaic, it comes out "Ashdod and Ekron, Inc.?"

No kidding. Run it through your own ummim.

's avatar #40322: — 09/15  at  09:38 PM
Yeah, it was a bust. It would have been a fine show on its own, but it really didn't have to do anything with evolution. The only exceptions were the kids reading Scopes transcripts and the thing about cloning.

Not the Christian Exodus segment, that was just cool. Didn't have anything to do with evolution, but it had me rolling. Segments like that remind me of why I'm a liberal atheist: we surely control the country!

#40324: — 09/15  at  09:53 PM
I was really disappointed tonight because there was almost nothing about evolution. I don't even know who Gwyneth Paltrow's husband is. On the other hand, I think it would be GREAT if all the born-agains moved to South Carolina. Can we make Christian Exodus mandatory?

#40325: — 09/15  at  09:59 PM
Please tell me that post isn't a parody. If it isn't it's quite possibly the funniest thing I've ever read. It's impossible to tell these days what's a parody and what's not, especially since Dembski has decided that the best way to destroy evolutionary theory is not only to boast about deliberately misquoting his opponents and actually timestamp his lies, but to write a computer game (clearly his "research" isn't taking up much of his time). But the fact that "It's so absurd a child could see through it" follows right after that hilarious bit with the hearts and the frogs (where are all the giant mammaried frogs, eh?) leads me to think it's a wind-up. Which brings up another point. If there isn't one already, somebody really needs to do a Landover Baptist type site for IDists. The only problem would be trying to make it more silly than they already are.

#40329: — 09/15  at  10:28 PM
I dunno, I think Roger may be The Real Deal. I looked at his blog, which was less wordy but no more insightful than his posting here.

I checked out his blog too and it seems 'real'. However, it only has like 4 entries in it which means it could of been easily created in the last few days. In fact, this is the first month its been started.

So...

Nobody could be that stupi--errr.. Nevermind. If it is a parody, I gotta give the author 2 thumbs up.

Please tell me that post isn't a parody.

I believe it is imperative for all to be able to tell what is parody or satire and what is not. There can be no room for confusion on these matters. The Daily Show, like the Onion, is clearly satire, except when it is telling the truth. However posts to science blogs should always be more clear. If you can't tell what the meaning is, then you should not post. Now, let's get that federal parody/satire commission up and running and there will be no confusion again. Just imagine the threat of satiric science, satiric experiments, even satiric theories. No, it is unimaginable.

#40333: — 09/15  at  11:33 PM
I thought it was pretty clear that Roger was a parody...either that or he's a delusional schizophrenic, and the post seemed too lucid for that.

For starters, how many conservative Christians would even reference the term "Mother Gaia?" C'mon, he couldn't have been more clear if he'd thanked the FSM at the end.

That being said, it's kinda sad that so many of the wingnuts out there are pretty much impossible to parody...I mean, I wanted to do a parody of Pat Robertson ordering a hit on someone and then saying Grace, and then he goes and ruins it for me by actually doing it.

I can't be the first to notice this, but if there is ever a Lifetime Original movie about the dramatic failure of Creationism, the choice for the part of William Dembski is obvious: Steve Buscemi as William Dembski: I'm still...
