Friday Random Ten: Midlife Crisis Edition

This custom is taking over the planet, so it seems redundant to explain it…but here you go, fire up iTunes (or your inferior mp3 player), set it to random play, and list the first ten.

Little Red CorvettePrince
SkamgreppetHedningarna
Another womanMoby
Dirty WomanPink Floyd
HomeSix Organs of Admittance
OceaniaBjörk
BlowoutThe Crystal Method
Skinfakse (Delivering The Light)Hege Rimestad
Wet DreamArt of Noise
Lonely, Poor And FatEthan Lipton

I sincerely hope this isn't supposed to be a magical scrying technique to illuminate my fate, because the unfortunate combination of a red corvette, another, dirty woman, and ending in wet dreams and lonely, poor and fat sounds like the story of a middle-aged loser.

.. Pink Floyd is more like it. And Little Red Corvette is something I can relate to..... and I have no idea what the rest of that stuff is. If you say its music I'll take you at your word. But then I pretty much only turn on the radio to listen to NPR so Im nobody to be judging.

If you like the above tunes, you really should check out The Arcade Fire, if you haven't already...

#13344: — 01/14  at  10:43 PM
...there´s also the second song, "Dirty Trick" by Swedish/Finnish The Pagans, go figure.

#13346: — 01/14  at  11:09 PM
...and btw, who in ¤#!"$£@!! has "Six Organs of Admittance"? Tell that to Eccentrica Gallumbits of Douglas Adams fame (ok I know, time to go to bed now).

Whoa...Bowie and Lennox? I've got "Under Pressure" with Bowie and Mercury, I didn't know he'd done it with Annie. Where's it from?

I was wondering the same thing myself. I'm a huge Bowie fan and have been for at least 25 years. Then I looked it up. Bowie did do a live version of "Under Pressure" at the Freddie Mercury tribute concert in 1992. I am not aware of its having being released on CD, although perhaps there are imports or bootlegs out there of it.

Hi PZ

I've been meaning to ask for some time. You aååarantly have scandinavian roots - from where Denmark, Sweden, Norway?

Snakker du, eller forstår du nogle skandinaviske sprog, prater du svenska? Snakker du norsk eller dansk?

Just courious, some of the song seem to be in Swedish

Jeff,

Dont leave your player laying about. It would be worth stealing.

All hope is not lost. Just heard Kasey Chambers singing "Pony" on Weekend Edition. (More featured on npr.org) I have been exposed to new music and I like it. Seems she is from down under. Must be what Wilkins listens to on his iPod.

2. Alison Krauss & Union Station - Doesn't Have To Be This Way
3. Badly Drawn Boy - The Blossoms
4. The Haunted - Godpuppet
5. Mattias Alkberg BD - Släng mina rester i en grav

8. Silverbullit - Run
9. Apoptygma Berzerk - Photoshop Sucks

#13632: — 01/18  at  02:22 PM
1. Sax & Violins - Talking Heads
2. Polka Power - Weird Al Yankovic
3. Starman - Culture Club (Cover of Bowie)
4. Iowa - John Linnell
5. Fingertips (Everything is Catching on Fire) - They Might Be Giants

7. Chess Piece Face - They Might Be Giants
8. Joe the Lion - David Bowie
9. Not Given Lightly - Frente!
10. Utah - John Linnell

Odd...how does an iPod's shuffle, work, anyway? The proportions aren't suspicious, but what are the odds of three TMBG songs in a row, two off the same album, plus two more of one of Linnell's side albums...out of a list of 1400 songs?

#13636: — 01/18  at  03:01 PM
What is this iTunes thing or MP3 players?t

#13691: — 01/19  at  12:01 AM
rrt -

I think Apollo 18 is kind of an exceptional case. There are close to 40 tracks from that album alone, so that's like 3% of your entire collection. Probably still noteworthy, but I suspect a calculation would show a surprisingly high probability of catching two in a row from that album

#13699: — 01/19  at  08:30 AM
I did wonder if perhaps, in such a sampling, it's statistically likely to get some "surprising" results, but I was too lazy to work it out. smile But it's nice to have Fingertips scattered throughout an entire library of music, lurking, ready to leap out at you when least expected. As it should be.
