Humpback whales have humanlike brain cells

Humpback whales have a type of brain cell seen only in humans, the great apes and other cetaceans such as dolphins, researchers reported on Monday. This might mean that humpback whales could be more intelligent then they’ve been given credit for. A type of cell called a spindle neuron was discovered in the cortex of the brains of humpback whales in areas comparable to where they are seen in humans and great apes. The researchers said they found spindle neurons in the same location in toothed whales with the largest brains, which suggests that they may be related to brain size. Toothed whales such as orcas are considered more intelligent than the baleen whales that filter water for their food.
