I'm on a video blog

Steve Garfield's Video Blog has a preview of the EvolveTV segment I'll be on tomorrow. I'm dreading it, to tell the truth—I'm the kind of dork who really ought to be kept behind the scenes. I may not be able to watch it, so you'll all have to tell me how lame I am.

Ha, the preview looked great. I can't wait to watch it.

The only possible way you can screw up, so bad, is if you refer to ID/creationism as a science. Then, I would probaly have to calmly exit out and block your site. Then delete all references to your site from my computer.

So any errors short of that, you're in good shape :D

It was hard to judge from the brief clip in the preview but there didn't seem to be any obvious problems.

Of course, if you're going to become a telepundit then you might need to look at your wardrobe - maybe a sports jacket with leather elbow patches or a leather bomber jacket. And you'll need some sort of catchphrase the the audience can identify with you - "billyuns and billyuns of genes" - something like that.

I'm looking forward to seeing the full interiew, though.

I tried watching the first chapter on evolve.tv, but it didn't work. I can't download it for some reason, and I can't view a stream because apparently my Quicktime version is too old, and I can't get the newest one because it only works on Windows 2000 and XP whereas I have 98.

One good thing about living in Australia, apart from the sense of achievement from daily escapes from the poisonous things, is that we are close to New Zealand.
The show was great! Sure, you seemed nervous in the beginning, but once the biology started you were like a very informative rocket. It was a nice touch too, matching the colour of your beard to your shirt. ;)

You look fine, PZ. Sorry again that we didn't meet up when you came to NY...

Writing while watching, I think you're doing fine.

I do think you missed the thrust of a question - which was whether the scrambling of DNA that takes place during gamete formation is advantageous from the point of view of natural selection - does having random variation built in give a species an advantage?

I think you looked just as (at least as) comfortable as Atrios did, and once you warmed to your topic, you seemed to settle right in. Vast, vast majority of it entirely accessible to the non-scientist. Thanks & well done.

Good stuff!

One thing - the connotations of the words "training", "well-trained" grate in my ears. Dogs are trained. Using the word "training" w.r.t. biology or science vs. religion makes it seem like a battle between conflicting conditioned reflexes. Of course, it is just probably me.

PZ you did just fine on your TV debut. I suspect a bit of stage fright. It gets easier...at least you didn't have to sing and dance....hmmmm....I'd pay good money to see you do that! grin
