More praise for Mooney

That Mooney fella's book, The Republican War on Science (amzn/b&n/abe/pwll), gets a rave review on Salon:

"The Republican War on Science" is nothing short of a landmark in contemporary political reporting. Mooney compiles and presents an extraordinary mountain of evidence, from several different fields, to demonstrate that the conservative wing of the Republican Party has launched an unprecedented and highly successful campaign to sow widespread confusion about the conclusions of science and its usefulness in political decision making. Using methods and strategies pioneered under the Reagan administration by the tobacco industry and anti-environmental forces, an alliance of social conservatives and corporate advocates has paralyzed or obfuscated public discussion of science on a whole range of issues. Not just climate change but also stem cell research, evolutionary biology, endangered-species protection, diet and obesity, abortion and contraception, and the effects of environmental toxins have all become arenas of systematic and deliberate bewilderment.

It looks like the book is getting the attention it deserves!

Oooh, thanks for the tip. As Chris is travelling, he is the last to be up to date with the reviews of his own book, so his blog is not the best source of info right now.

Also, MajikThad compiled several blog-reviews of the book:

Remember the question Stewart put to Mooney - is there a Consumer Reports for science?

I'm reminded of the constant need for that. Take a look, e.g., at
http://www.lewrockwell.com/sardi/sardi43.html

Unlike cancer drugs, I.V. vitamin C selectively killed cancer cells, but not healthy cells, and showed no toxicity.   The ability of intravenous vitamin C to kill lymphoma cells was remarkable – almost 100% at easily achievable blood serum concentrations.

Well, my two copies have arrived. I think I will seal them both (my library embosser). I plan on taking one to our library just so the republicans here can get a full head of spit on!

A very conservative friend of mine told me that, with a few exceptions, conservatives don't read. He called people who read as typically "non-science-educated liberal elites". Why? Because conservatives tend to be busy doing things: running experiments, raising children, etc.. I'm not sure how true this is. But I'm curious just how many conservatives will read this book?

He also said that scientists tend to be more conservative on average than, say, English majors, with Physicists being the most conservative. He claims to have seen surveys that prove this. I'd like to see more than his anecdotal evidence.
