Nina Paley

Sita

I've been enjoying the work of the cartoonist Nina Paley since I discovered it the other day, in particular this lovely series of retold Indian myths, Sita Sings the Blues. It's beautifully stylized, and it's all told using the songs of 1920s blues singer, Annette Hanshaw. It's a love and rejection story with Sita and Rama and Hanuman and demons, and it sometimes gets bloody, in a cartoonish way…but mostly it's just a fascinating blend.

She also has some fantastic short animations that appeal to the environmentalist. The Stork (31MB Quicktime) makes me want to buy a shotgun, while The Wit and Wisdom of Cancer (17MB Quicktime) reminds me of some Republicans I've known. They are awfully big files, but worth it if you've got a reasonably fast connection.

I heart Nina.

Small world! I knew Nina when she was here in San Francisco. Somewhere I even have a napkin sketch she did of my ex-wife. I adore her work and am really glad to see her getting out there.

If you want to know a little about the non-cartoon Sita here are a couple of articles of a liberal bent:

Cool. I've never heard of her before, but now I'm glad I did.

Thanks PZ. I thoroughly enjoyed Nina's Sitayana. The pairing of jazzy blues and this story is not something that would occur to me.

So did I. So did Chris. Way small world.

I love her work. Through a combination of weird coincidences, I hadn't seen Fetch until last week. Blew me away and left me with a case of the midnight giggles.

I'm thinking the average geometry class would be much improved by having that for an introduction.

To be completely, rigorously accurate, I've never met Nina. Phone chatted once or twice, many happy usenet conversations, and of course spent many thousands of hours hanging out with her off-and-on ex-boyfriend.

I trump you all. I knew Nina when she was doing Nina's Adventures in Santa Cruz! Actually I didn't know Nina, just her comic in the Santa Cruz Comic News (a great publication, incidentally). I did have a friend who did meet her and get a signed strip at WonderCon back in 1992-93. And somewhere around here I've got her first book of Nina's Adventures.

Nina's at the Museum of Comic & Cartoon Art TONIGHT, 11/14/05 @ 7pm in NYC, 594 Broadway (Houston/Prince), showing the first completed 20 minutes of her Sita film, and discussing her work.

I had the pleasure of watching her artwork drive around on a VW bus in Urbana, IL in the late '80s & '90s. I also got to see it everytime I went to a friend's house and banged around on his piano, also covered top to bottom with Nina's geometric patterns. Way cool stuff!

“Sita Sings the Blues” is a fresh new look at the Ramayana from Sita’s perspective. I found this wonderful blog by Nina Paley through Pharyngula today. It has been a wonderful couple of hours going through all of her cartoons. I part...
