Now I get wingnut e-mail!

Bleh. My criticisms of sieve-boy roused the ire of another subset of the wingnut community, so now I'm not only getting e-mail from creationists, but apologists for Jonah Goldberg. One insists that "Intellectual integrity requires [me] to respond" to Goldberg's whiny rebuttal…no, it doesn't. Goldberg is a talentless hack, a pathetic creature with no skills other than as fluffer to warmongers. Besides, Juan Cole has already addressed it.

This particular e-mail ranter singles out Goldberg's accusation that Juan Cole was also a "warmonger" as a devastating indictment. All it indicts, however, is the limited, binary mindset of the right wing, which tries to pretend that everyone to their left loves Saddam Hussein, coddles terrorism, and wants to see America destroyed. What Goldberg has discovered is that Cole despised Hussein; this is not a shocking revelation. I think Hussein was an evil butcher, and I thought so even at the time Donald Rumsfeld was shaking his hand. I also have no problem agreeing that terrorists are the scum of the earth, and I also love my country as a source of great egalitarian ideas and democracy and freedom …which is why I'm particularly incensed to see these winger nutcases endorsing the idea of my country using terror and torture and bombing and restrictions on civil rights. These wingers push two of my buttons: love of country and hatred of terrorists. Why must they oppose those ideals?

Well, both David Neiwert on the left and Scott McConnell on the right have lately and accurately used the "F"-word to answer just that question, so I guess I can too.

Your wingnut pals are fascists.

Did you send him your parable?

One passage from Goldberg's column really stuck out for me:

Inherent to democracy is the notion that an elected official actually has the power and authority to act on the things he or she promises to do... [T]here must be a good-faith understanding that votes can be translated into action. If it turns out that politicians are merely kabuki dancers for the public's amusement and that all significant decision-making authority resides in some star chamber of mullahs, that isn't democratic.

Replace "star chamber of mullahs" with "United States Embassy," and what do you get? I mean, not to be too cynical or anything, but by Goldberg's own standard, don't we have to wait and see if the Iraqis are able to form a legitimate and sovereign government before we pass judgment on this election? Is there any reason to think the Bush administration will let actual democracy break out in Iraq?

"Fluffer", eh? Good to see you finally breaking into the non-squid porn industry lingo.

Ben,

why on earth do you think that we in the Invertebrate Porn Industry don't know about fluffers? Look, it's obvious to anyone with eyes that Thomisus onustus is, emm, impressively equipped, but that doesn't do us a whole lot of good if we can't keep him, emm, encouraged, if you know what I mean (and I think you do).

PZ,

it's always impressive to watch an American patriot in full flow. Keep it up!

Thomisus onustus is, emm, impressively equipped...

Maybe that's what keeps the female in a docile and receptive state, as opposed to his (or her) affinity for S&M.

Speaking of which, can S&M be observed in other (non-arachnid) species?

Oh, that's just play. When they're done, the female shucks off the cords with no difficulty at all.

Speaking of which, can S&M be observed in other (non-arachnid) species?

One hears it is not unknown among humans.
