Now I understand where the IDiots are coming from

Red State Rabble has a very useful flow chart to help you discriminate science from religion. It needs to be expanded, though—it doesn't explain what to do when you find yourself in a liberal arts college with a more ordinary sort of scientist.

I was an undergrad at a small liberal (yes, actually liberal) arts college in the midwest. It was a progressive Mennonite (no bonnets, buggies or beards. They look, act and vote more like Unitarian/Universaliste) college.

As part of the required curriculum I took Biology, Chemistry and Physics. I also took a Religion and Science seminar course. Evolution was taught and discussed as the established science that it is at that school and I believe that the professors were established and legitimate scientists.

...it doesn't explain what to do when you find yourself in a liberal arts college with a more ordinary sort of scientist.

In the eyes of a patriotic "True American", there's really no difference between a "world famous researcher" and a "more ordinary sort of scientist". From the perspective of the American Patriot, both are leftist, America-hating, god-hating, anti-Christian atheists. Adding an "ordinary sort of scientist" box to that flow-chart would be nothing more than an excercise in redundancy.

There are a few choice Letters to the Editor in the most recent Nature. My favorite excerpt:

"A terrific argument against "Intelligent Design" came to me recently after two consecutive talks, one on the Wnt signalling pathway, the next on G-protein crosstalk in control of cellular calcium. Just look at the details, and you'll immediately abandon all thoughts that biological systems were designed with any intelligence whatsoever." "

Amen.

The direct link to the jpeg doesn't work; you have to go through Red State Rabble's post. But you don't even need to enlarge the thumbnail there; it's quite readable.

I hope PZ fans will take my comment at RSR with a grain of NaCl.
