Oh, yeah, about that play—

the one my son is in—I should mention that they won first prize in a local competition, and now are moving on to a larger regional competition, and if they do well there, on to the state competition. And Connlann also won a medal for an outstanding performance.

So I compared him to Cary Grant and Clark Gable, and he just looked at me blankly and said, "Who?" Oh, he makes me feel ancient. Next time I'm going to praise him by telling him he could be another Tor Johnson or Rondo Hatton.

Who? (I know, pretty obvious ... but somebody had to do it.)

Cool! Congrats to your son.

I don't know who those people are either.

I am soooo old.

Tor Johnson:

Rondo Hatton:

Both were freakish B horror movie character actors in the 50s.

Your memory's failing you. Hatton died in 1946.

Oy, and he was so young.

Well, all I remember him from is the late night creature-features I used to watch as a kid in the 60s, and I just assumed all B&W horror movies were from that decade when I was born.

Oh, and I also mentioned that dashing fellow, Errol Flynn, to him, and got that same "Huh?" comment...so I said, "You know, Robin Hood!"

Which led him to wonder if I was talking about Kevin Costner. I coulda wept.

I'm going to have to start buying some DVD classics and get these kids properly edumacated.

With your love for pirates, PZ, you really should make him watch Douglas Fairbanks in The Black Pirate. I think Fairbanks' swashbuckler could probably take Flynn's bandito.

Rrawr!

I at least knew the first two, although B movie actors are mostly out of my realm. If it makes you feel any better, PZ, it's not about old and young, just cultured and relatively uncultured. Half of the references I make are completely lost on everyone around me. Not even esotery like Schrödinger; simple ones like Lenin or Joyce.

...it’s just cultured [versus] relatively uncultured.

So, the people who know old B-movie actors are which?

Of course, I first heard about Rondo Hatton from good old Frank Zappa. Great summary at the link below.

Damn I miss Frank.

This is truly an cultured/uncultured thing. Only the elite and aesthetically refined of any age are familiar with Ed Wood regulars like Tor Johnson.

Well, let's face it: any teenager who knows about anything other than what MTV News covered is cultured by comparison.
