I saw The Corpse Bride this weekend—a fun movie, but is anyone else getting more than a little tired of Danny Elfman scores? They all sound the same, they're noodly and irritating to the point of distraction, and you forget them immediately after you've heard them.

They're so forgettable that it would be excusable if you chose to talk about anything other than Elfman.

I know PZ is busy but what is the excuse over at the Panda's Thumb, a blog with, what, a dozen contributors, for its failure to provide up-to-date info and analysis of goings on in the world of creationist bullcrap?

I mean, it's not like there's a trial going on that's getting national attention or anything ... it's not as if any would-be journalists are looking at the site for news or commentary or ideas or anything like that.

Here's some cool stuff:

http://www.ncseweb.org/resources/news/2005/US/98_discovery_institute_and_thomas_10_23_2005.asp

This is a transcript of part of a debate where Ken Miller gets to laugh it up when one of the Thomas More shmucks calls a Discovery Institute shill on a GRATUITOUS LIE.

The above link is to the Pennsylvania chapter of the ACLU -- the best place for the latest info on the Dover trial (eeking out the York Daily Record by a hair).

HAAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHHAH!!!!!

Judge Jones struck down the Discovery Institute's amicus brief because they tried to sneak in the testimony of experts that they pulled from the case (e.g., Stephen "Pro B.S. Artist" Meyer, and William "Dumber than Hell" Dumbski!!!!!!

What a bunch of sleaze artists. Too funny. Federal Judges around the country are beginning to get a whiff of the Disclaimery Institute's rank underarm odor. You don't have to attend UC San Diego Law School anymore to understand how badly they stink.

"And there's no denying that Oingo Boingo was cool." Oh yes there very much is.

The Taste of Pharyngula sidebar right now contains "Lobster sex", "Octopus sex", "Tentacle sex", and "Worm porn!" No wonder the fundies hate scientists...

As I read that order, the amicus on behalf of the Discovery Institute is denied, but the amicus signed by several "professional scientists" was not denied.

Jim Anderson: For the brilliant Simpsons theme, Elfman can be forgiven a multitude of sins.

That was 15 years ago. What's he done for me lately? Other than the Emmy winning Desperate Housewives theme?? (Which is largely a rip on his To Die For score, IMHO.)

Corpse Bride suffers because it seems like it wants to be a musical -- it has an opening number, after all. But when the show's over, only four songs have been heard. Compare that the the 11 from Nightmare Before Christmas.

Next up for His Elfness: Charlotte's Web and a sort-of sequel to his brother's Forbidden Zone. If he manages to make those two "sound the same," he's either a total waste or a complete genius.

BB - you are correct. Per the footnote:

We will accord the brief of amici curiae biologists and other scientists the consideration to which it may
be entitled in the case sub judice.

My impression is that the "amica curia biologists and other scientists brief" does not append Meyer's full expert report, as did the DI's brief.

I'm also guessing Judge Jones will let his clerks read the "amici curiae biologists and other scientists" brief so they can all have a good laugh before giving the brief the "consideration it may be entitled in the case sub judice."

The Patagonian Toothfish is apparently very very tasty.

So much so that the poor thing is being hunted to extinction.

Merseyside mourns dead chicken
Merseyside police have ordered the local community to "stop grieving" after Liverpudlians flocked to deposit flowers, cards and teddy bears in tribute to a dead chicken found in an alleyway. According to the BBC, one card read: "RIP Little Baby. Safe in the arms of Jesus. From someone who is a loving mother xxxx."

A spokeswoman for Merseyside police explained to the BBC: "It seems a member of the public saw the remains of a foetus, which possibly resembled a human foetus, and called us. We cordoned off the area to investigate, as we would with any possible suspicious death, but it became apparent it was not a human foetus. The flowers and cards are obviously the result of local gossip, but we can assure people that the remains were not human." ...
[my emphasis]

These Merseysiders need a little Haeckeling.

Chickens are delicious. Chicken fetuses are also very delicious, both fried and scrambled.

This has been a part of the chicken awareness network, posted to open threads across the internets in case of emergency.

When I saw this image:

(on the story about the HapMap) I couldn't help thinking the FSM was having a baby. The meatballs are positively glowing (a sure sign of pregnancy) and the noodly appendages are in a greater state of disarray than normal. Are there any pirate midwives? Or is it having the baby for lunch (and, being a supernatural entity, can eat a whole one)?
