Sartorial splendor

Josh Rosenau has found a delightful clothing line I'm going to have to get into: Kthulhu Kitsch. And the toys are neat-o, too.

Kthulhu Kitsch

I pointed these out to my wife, since it is my birthday next week. She gave it a critical eye, and pointed out that while it says "squid", the picture is of an octopod. And now you know what it takes to win the heart of a crusty old biology geek like me.

My brother, a longtime Cull of Cthulthu player, has a lot of that stuff. He's the kind of guy who goes out in public wearing his Miskatonic University T-shirt.

Do not neglect the cute widdle shoggoth plush, nor the Nyarlathotep of cuddliness. With, I might add, mysterious invertebrate eyes.

While I do admire cephalopods, with their surprising levels of intelligence and damn cool pigmentation patterns (a cuttlefish hovering in a tank looks like an undulating jewel), and funky tentacles ...

what is with you and squid????

After many many years in sweden I still haven´t been able to establish if the swedes have any common word that distinguishes squid from octopi. The word "bläckfisk" (inkfish)seems to be a case of one word fits all. The spaniards on the other hand have many differnt names referring to squid but the names are (I believe) mostly a reference to culinary applicability.
I think that hovering squid and swimming stingray are still some of the most beautiful sights I have seen while snorkeling.

Just watched some film of Humboldt squid at 45 m at night off the coast of Chile. Thousands of 2 metre long squid all whole-body-communicating at once, in the dark. Stupendous. Nothing could be more like being in outer space and seeing aliens. That's the attraction of squid.

(BTW in Dutch, squid and octopus are both inkvis, but cuttlefish are zeekatten. Seacats, awwww.)

Cuttlefish are kind of kittenish, but I wonder if the name might be derived from the similarity of a cephalopod to the cat-o'-nine-tails. What's the word for the "cat" in Dutch.

Happy birthday, PZ! smile

Palau, where did you see that lovely video?

Has anyone else noticed that you never see Cthulhu and Dr. Zoidberg together? Makes you wonder...

rrt: It was on Nat. Geo. Europe, on Dutch cable TV, and it appeared to have been a Spanish production dubbed into English and subtitled in Dutch, IIRC.

Nick: Apparently, according to my English/NL dictionary, 'cat o'ninetails' is 'zie kat o'nine tails', so that looks like a dead-end. I'm going to assume for the meantime that it's due to the cuttlefish's catlike qualities of inquisitiveness and also that it's a possible reference to their vertical pupils.

D'oh. I've been caught at last. I didn't catch that mistake until after we printed up the shirts. I've been debating what to do about it. If you have any suggestions, feel free to let me know. =)
