Travel Plans!

For those who want to set up a betting pool on what catastrophes I will encounter, stay away from the freeways and airports while I'm in transit, or want to say hello if I make it to your home town, I get to flit around the country a little bit in the next few weeks. Here's the itinerary.

  • In a spectacular bit of bad timing, I have to move my son into his dorm at the UW Madison campus on 29 August. That's also the first day of classes at UMM, so I have to play hooky that day. The original plan was that my wife would take care of it, but she has a job interview that day (hooray!). If any of my Fall term Neurobiology students read this, you get a day off. I'll try not to do it again.
  • I and the Pharyngulettes (my wife Mary and daughter Skatje) will be flying off to New York on 15-18 September, which doesn't conflict with any of my classes, fortunately. I have some obligations, the purpose of the visit, that will tie me up for a good part of Friday, but we have Saturday free and clear for sightseeing and hobnobbing. If any New Yorkers want to get together on 17 September, drop me a line. If you're all busy, of course, I suspect we might be able to find something to do in that town.

Rats. Middleman beat me to it.

A fraternity brother of mine was doing grad work in Archaeology at Madison when he got drafted and sent to Phu Bai; I trust the same won't happen again.

PZ,
A fun thing I enjoyed most growing up 20 miles from NYC as a kid, was to go the the top of the Empire State Building about a half hour before sunset and stay till about the same time or longer afterwards (weather permitting). One gets a wonderful view of the sun lit city with central park to the north, the rivers on either side and the harbor to the south, not to mention a fascinating array of the various buildings. Then, as the sun gradually sets, one gets to see the lights blink on by the dozens until the city is filled and defined by its lights. Truly an amazing transformation.

Enjoy your trip. BW

I can only assume that you're taking your daughter on a tour of Hunter College's spawling, bucolic campus!

Please, PZ, if you're going to publish the dates you're away from home on da Interweb, ask your neighbours and the police department to keep an eye on your house while you're gone. And make sure your insurance is up to date.

This is Morris. You can't imagine how safe it is to live so far from anything urban, in a teeny-tiny town where everyone knows who you are.

Yes, everyone in my neighborhood and all of my students will know I'm gone, and will keep an eye on the place.

Hey! Hamilton, NZ is not on that itinerary, pz. What's with that?!

#37182: — 08/23  at  04:32 PM
Let us know when you make it to Boston.

I did my undergrad at Madison, and LOVED it, every single year. It's said that Madison is 50 square miles, surrounded by the rest of reality. They say that about Ithaca, NY, as well, but Madison is much better.
I'll try to catch you in NYC...

Boston and New Zealand...OK, I'll try to squeeze those in next time. Although it might be a while -- the teaching crunch is about to hit me in the head.

I spent my early teen years in a couple of very small midwestern towns, we didn't even have locks on the doors much less use them.

I imagine quite a few of us NY readers will have free time, right? Let's see if we can treat Prof. Myers to drinks and/or dinner, depending, of course, on his plans. I already emailed PZ. --Jeff at NYU

Hey,

I'm currently a senior at UW Madison. If you want some completely unsolicited advice, have an honest conversation with your son before he comes to school about drinking.

Here's the deal: his roommate will drink. His floor will drink. The hall will drink. The entire dorm... will drink. Everyone he'll meet drinks. I don't think there's anything wrong with it; some of the best times of my life have been spent drinking. But an honest conversation with my parents about drinking, how much to drink, limits, how to tell when to stop, etc would have really helped, at least for me.

Also, since we have class Friday the 2nd then a long weekend w/ Monday off, tell him to wait until the weekend after to get completely hammered and throw up in the dorm. That first, and probably even second, weekend the RAs will be looking for someone to make an example of.

Oh yes, if you need help moving or just want to move more quickly (the whole area will be a zoo), just drop me a line; I should be in town that day.

PS: another piece of advice: dorm rooms are small. Lay out all the crap he wants to bring and leave half of it at home. Better yet, two thirds. Everything can be bought here or shipped.

Tonight's topic? Why does PZ hate us so much that he scheduled a trip to the Big Apple the week we were supposed to visit him in Morris?

I have Madison envy still, and I live 20 minutes from one of the greatest cities on earth.

Some great restaurants there. And it is a party school, but most all the kids walk, not drive, so that's not as bad. Except when they freeze in the snow, or fall off tall buildings...
