What a dismaying mess

I've been spending most of my time getting ready for fall term classes, and when I read anything, it's usually science papers. But after avoiding the political side for a few days, I come back to it and what do I find? Conservative eliminationism (ameliorated by their appalling hypocrisy), Limbaugh laughing about kicking the Democrats out of the country, rednecks smashing crosses and flags and firing warning shots, and Seymour Hersh warning me of a "Tet offensive" in Iraq. Oh, and our incompetent administration has been lying all along, but that one will never surprise me. It's easy to get acclimated to the insanity out there, and it's shocking to come back to it.

I guess it's a good thing the school year is starting up again soon…I need an excuse to crawl back into my shell.

Oh, yikes. Another laundry list of abominations.

Glad you're back from sharing a cave in Afganastan with Osama.

You may also wish to add this Crooked Timber post to the list. I'll be integrating some of Henry's finds into "They've Got To Be Carefully Taught".

But it's OK for the Bushites to lie, because "God is on our side"

Man, that Sy Hersh interview is frightening. It's so much worse when you try to think of any time he's been wrong.

"...our incompetent administration has been lying all along..."

At times like this, I pity them. They're caught in a Catch-22. Either they're accused of bungling the pre-war planning, or they're accused of planning too early (then pretending that it was never on the table). Even the most charitable account still reflects badly on the administration: yes, they had a pre-war plan, and they still messed it up.

y'know, it's not surprising BushCo is seeking refuge with groups of people who do not know how to think for themselves.

PZ,

You would be more convincing if you weren't so obviously biased.

Yeah, P.Z.! How dare you express your clearly held opinions forcefully! You're not convincing anyone who is already biased against you!

#36240: Arun — 08/17  at  09:15 PM
It isn't P.Z. who is biased, it is just that the facts are that way; sorry if the facts don't square with your political ideology. I mean, is one supposed write with only oblique hints that this administration is truth-challenged, and that will somehow be more convincing?

#36241: — 08/17  at  09:17 PM
"Qualiatative" might be more convincing, as well, if he were able to spell his own name correctly.

Scroll over my name and you'll (possibly) realize that he/she (Qualiatative), in fact, has a kick-ass name (which is not misspelled)!

Still, Arun (and paperwight - ha!) are absolutely right, regarding the fallaciousness of crying "biased!" at the so-called fact-worhipers!

Speaking of which, please Bokanovsky don't accuse paperwight of misspelling his/her name, either. ;)

Jeebus, have we had that conversation before, or do you just like the name?

#36247: — 08/17  at  09:54 PM
There was a conversation (amongst yourself and others) - you just mentioned that it was a long story, but that it in some way described you.

Regardless, it was (after the conversation) understood that "wight" was indeed an actual word.

Of course, I fancy the name, as well.

Ah. Well, thanks.

Ah, my own inability to spell - revealed again! Better check my own name at this rate...B-o-k-a....

covington, you have a short memory. Hersh is damaged goods.

Don't you recall how he assured us that Bush was going to fire Franks for his poor performance in Afghanistan?

Hersh has been turned into a conduit for some ax grinders in the Pentagon, and he hasn't gotten anything right for years.

I sympathize, a little, with Professor Myers's irritation, but he needs to make somewhat finer discriminations. (After all, Dems are the subtle, nuanced party, right?)

The Crawford farmer is probably a redneck (so am I), but he wasn't objecting to Sheehan's politics but to her unneighborliness.

He should have, though. We have Lileks to thank for proving to us (see his current Screedblog) that Sheehan is not antiwar, she's just on the other side.
