Zimmer on Whales

There's an excellent summary of whale evolution on The Loom, with a lovely logic puzzle to illustrate the pattern of evolutionary transformations.

I loved his puzzle.

BTW, TNR now has letters to the editor and responses by Coyne and Wieseltier:

A gloss on WHALE RIDERS would be appreciated, if you've the time please Dr. Myers
http://www.utah.edu/unews/releases/05/sep/whalelice.html There ought to be re-incarnation, just so I can come back as a whale rider.

Someone calling himself Huckleberry Finn who is either a creationist or simply a troll posted some nonsense on Carl's site. It seems to me that many of this sort use pseudonyms rather than their own names. Perhaps they have a remnant of shame. Or perhaps it's fear of being recognized as what they are.

Aren't cane toads poisonous as well?

Well, that was in the wrong thread.

It's too bad Zimmer's excellent book on evolution didn't quite catch the latest science on whale ancestors. It's still got the mesonychid story.

Read it anyway. Science is not dogmatic, it is constantly evolving.
